The Research // Prototype Differences

Here we are going to catelogue the differences between the new Prototype roms we have.
Thanks goes out to Drx and Hidden Palace.org.

Our mirror of the roms are in the links below.

The Game Gear Prototypes:

There are 5 prototypes and they are all from a different date, as a result these builds will be refered to by their date.

The protos are as follows:

Title for 0909 Set on US/PAL
Title for the remaing 4 protos
Set on US/PAL
The title for the final, it is identical to the 4 later protos.

Ristar GG (Prototype - Sep 09, 1994) Or 0909
Ristar GG (Prototype - Oct 19, 1994) Or 1019
Ristar GG (Prototype - Oct 26, 1994) Or 1026
Ristar GG (Prototype - Nov 01, 1994) Or 1101
Ristar GG (Prototype - Nov 02, 1994) Or 1102

Currently we haven't gone through these games much but 0909 and 1019 have the debug mode active and you can skip levels and move around the leve when paused and held a button when unpaused. Similar to the final versions code cheat.

Another difference is 0909's sound test has no conductor bird and says the umotomats on stage.

0909's Sound Test
1019 onwards Sound Test

More as we find them.....

The Megadrive/Genesis Prototypes:

These 4 prototypes are very interesting, two appear to be more like the JPN final and 2 seem more like the USA/PAL Final between localisation! Though the latter two are very different to the final....

0701's Title Screen
Resembles Feel's somewhat with the star placement and colour.
0718 and the final JPN Screen are identical.

The First two protos are again numbered based on date so:

Ristar (Prototype - Jul 01, 1994) (hidden-palace.org).zip becomes 0701
Ristar (Prototype - Jul 18, 1994) (hidden-palace.org).zip becomes 0718

These two versions have the same differences that the Japan vs USA page explains.

A pulsating tri-dot enemy... not gonna say its a triforce.. oops!

In 0701 in level 2-2 there is a odd red tri-dot enemy that cannot be destroyed but dissapears when you defeat all the orange seahorse enemies in the chamber.

Proto 1-1 treasure level. note the green crystals
The JPN final.. notice the spaces where the crystals were!

Noted in theText, Tiles and Oddities section there was a odd sprite found for a spining gem.
This is present in the protos. Also all the treasure rounds had the purple pallette.

0701 Level names:

Ones in Grey are only shown in this beta's level select, ones in white are shown in the final when going to the next level.

Round 1

Round 2

Round 3

Round 4

Round 5

Round 6

Round 7

LIGHT PLAIN

BLUE WATER

FLARE SURFACE

DU-DI-DA

PURE WHITE

LAW? CHAOS?

DANCE-DANCE!!

SPLASH SNOW

BRAIN MAZE

INONIS DOLL

RIHO IS COMING

OHSAT ATTACK

ADAHAN FALL

AWAUECK SING

ITAMOR LUNCH

URANIM POWER

SIEK KAISER!!

If you compare the text within the game's coding, from 0718 through to the final has the grey names as "NEXT AREA" and seem to have the inonis doll and siek kaiser!! parts removed!

Something of note.. in the final roms there is some text "RISTAR IS NOT.... VOLT!" well 0701's rom header is
-- Volt -- the voltage! Possibly a previous name given to Ristar when he was redesigned from Feel. This could explain the lightening bolts on his shoes!

0812 and 0826's title screen changed the name completly!
We present to you Dexstar!

As before:

Ristar (Prototype - Aug 12, 1994) (hidden-palace.org).zip becomes 0812
Ristar (Prototype - Aug 26, 1994) (hidden-palace.org).zip becomes 0826

Yes, other than changing the enemies and Ristar's appearance to a more angry one, they were going to even change his name for localisation. This is not uncommon and happened alot between regions, an example is Tombi! on the Playstation, it was also called Tomba! in europe.

Greedy was Far Out man!
Oh... my bad!

These versions show the legendary hero plot being developed and also has some great engrish which was changed to the final wording within 12 days of each other. Between 0718 and 0812 they had done alot to the localisation!

Itamor is already changed, the enemies and ristar are only angry, Ouruto in the intro has been reomved, the level names have been changed and they redesigned 85% of the title logo! no planet, no small yellow shooting star, almost a new logo!
Even the final screen with the Giant hands has been done! They really had some fast workers on localisation!

Something that is interesting and related to the Volt name mentioned previously...

Now this is interesting.. This was added between 0718 and 0812.. but why this?
Did they try to go back with the Volt idea for Ristar? Who knows.. we may sadly never find out.

Again more as we find it....
